Vietnam is overhauling its national maritime policy, shifting from a sector-by-sector approach to an integrated, ecosystem-based model built around marine spatial planning and advanced technology.
The south-east Asian nation has a coastline of more than 3,260km and a maritime jurisdiction covering more than one million square kilometres. The marine economy alone accounts for around 22% of GDP.
Sea transport handles around 90% of Vietnam’s import and export cargo by volume, and Vietnam has developed a seaport system of 286 ports.
