The Institute of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (formerly called Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology), Faculty of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering, Gdańsk University of Technology is the only institute in Poland which has continuously educated and provided scientific, research and development activities since 1904 in the field of Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, and Marine Engineering. At the moment, it has about 850 undergraduate, 250 postgraduate and 17 Ph.D. students in three fields of studies: Ocean Engineering, Power Engineering and Maritime Transport and Logistics. The institute employs 80 full-time and 40 part-time academic staff.

The core fields of the institute activities are structured within: Theory and Ship Design, Ship Manufacturing Technology, Quality Systems and Materials, Hydromechanics and Hydroacoustics, Ship Power Plants, Marine Mechatronics, Marine Control and Energy. International Transport Intermediaries Club Ltd. (ITIC), is a mutual insurance company with over 80 years of experience of providing professional indemnity insurance to companies involved in the transport industry. Naval architects bring together many skills in the delivery of an extremely high profile service. The stakes are often extremely high, which means that the downside can be disastrously low if mistakes creep in.

Human error can happen, and when it does the claims can be expensive. ITIC has covered claims against naval architects arising from such errors as:

• Inadequate welding design causing ships to crack;
• Yacht design that leads to cracks in the hull as a result of an error in transposing the design specifications onto the blueprint drawings;
• Erroneous conceptual design, inadequate preparation of technical specifications, design approval incorrectly given.

You don't have to make a mistake to be sued. As a naval architect, you could receive a claim from the owners of a vessel you worked on even if you were not negligent in your design. One of the functions of ITIC insurance is the cover of defence costs, which can be extremely high. ITIC's claims team has a wide knowledge of claims made against naval architects.

There is a Master of Research (MRes) in Technology for the Marine Environment, and a part-time Masters in Marine Technology (delivered in collaboration with four other UK universities). A further distance learning MSc programme is offered in Singapore.

PhD programmes include Engineering and Science in the Marine Environment, which is a PhD with integrated studies.

The Department is highly research active with consistently high research ratings in government assessments. Most research is conducted with industry partners and seeks useful industrial applications. This includes several Knowledge Transfer Partnerships transferring technology into industry.

Facilities in the school are excellent and include:

Specialist Craft Naval Architects

Vectis Marine Design was established in 2008 as an independent marine consultancy specialising in the design of military and professional small craft up to around 35m.

We specialise in the design of military, coast guard, police, customs, rescue and other specialist craft for military authorities, government agencies and professional operators.  These craft are typically to meet complex and challenging operational requirements with demanding speed, range and payload requirements often combined with weight, dimension and other constraints.

We offer the full range of naval architecture, engineering, design and trials services including structural design in aluminium (with build kits), GRP and advanced composites.  We also have an established in-house FEA capability.

All of our work is to Classification Society, or other recognised, standards including DNV, BV, LR, MCA, ISO and SOLAS as well as military standards.

We are familiar with the integration of specialist military payloads including weapon systems and sensors, ballistic protection and navigation and communication systems, and in the deployment of small craft from larger vessels, and in their transport by and deployment from military aircraft.

In addition to our engineering and design capability we also provide project management, documentation, and tender preparation services.

Our clients include military and professional boat builders, defence prime contractors and boat operators.
