For years, autonomous shipping has been framed primarily as a technology challenge. The debate has focused on what ships could do without direct human intervention and how quickly those capabilities might advance.
That framing no longer reflects where the industry stands today.
With the International Maritime Organization’s adoption of the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, autonomous shipping is entering what I would call its international reality. The MASS Code, which took effect on 1 July 2026 as a non-mandatory framework, provides the first internationally agreed structure for assessing autonomous and remotely operated vessels.
