About the Talk: The sinking of the sailing yacht BAYESIAN in August 2024 generated a lot of discussion and speculation in the media. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch released their interim report on the accident in May 2025. This report gave a detailed summary of the accident as well as presenting initial technical findings and a stability study. Away from sensation and speculation, this presentation will give a technical view on the report and compare it against other publicly available information and another detailed analytical study. It will also give an insight into the history of the stability criteria and modes of operation which apply to yachts like BAYESIAN. As we wait for the various investigations to conclude, the presentation will ask what can be done now as a call to action for improved safety.
