Title: Technical Lecture: Enabling Availability for Surface Ship Structures through Digital Twins
Presented by: Alysson Mondoro (Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division)
Date: Monday, 20th of April2026
Time: Refreshments from 18:15, lecture starts at 18:45
Venue: University of the West of England, Lecture Theatre 1N05, Building N, BS16 1QY (and online)
About the Talk: Digital twins, smart ships, structural health monitoring systems and the like have emerged as the leading edge of technology to enable increased availability and operability of vessels. However, differing perceptions of objectives and performance assessment can lead to a miscommunication of expectations and misalignment of requirements. Furthermore, for some, the trustworthiness of data is assumed, while others are aware that there are quality assurance measures that must be taken. In such a case, the digital twin delivered may not be what it needs to be. This discussion paper aims to highlight the need to establish clear objectives, articulate and embrace risk tolerance, ensure data quality, and establish clear requirements documents.
About the Presenter: Dr. Mondoro is an Exchange Engineer from Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) posted to Naval Authority & Technology Group Surface (NATG) Ship Structures. At NATG, Aly is responsible for research and development and supports naval ship certifications. Aly’s background is in structural loads and response quantification from analytical methods, model scale testing, and full-scale measurements. Current work focuses on ultimate and residual strength of hull girders.
Dr. Mondoro has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Lehigh University. Aly has been with Carderock for 9 years and seconded to NATG for 2 years (with 1 year remaining in post).
