Overview

How ship accidents shaped modern stability standards, through Jaakko Rahola’s pioneering research and its lasting impact on ship safety.

Most naval architects are familiar with modern intact stability criteria, but few know the accidents that inspired them. This presentation explores the largely forgotten vessel losses and capsizings analysed by Finnish naval architect Jaakko Rahola in his landmark 1939 research. By comparing ships that survived severe conditions with those that did not, Rahola established the principles that would form the foundation of modern stability criteria and influence regulations for the next century. Blending maritime history, casualty investigation and naval architecture, the talk reveals how a series of little-known accidents became one of the most important turning points in ship safety, and why their lessons continue to shape vessel design today.
