Event Information:

A new Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub report provides a framework supporting the design and regulation of ‘Safe Havens’ – a designated location for taking refuge from an ammonia release aboard ammonia-fuelled ships.

This work is based on the findings of a cross-sector literature review. The work extracts best practices from the onshore, offshore and maritime sectors and translates these for the Safe Haven use case. The key findings of the report are that:

• Safe Havens should be viewed as human-centred systems, not as standalone entities;
• Standardisation is needed to ensure that Safe Haven performance is assessed accurately against worst-case scenarios; and
• Design requirements can be categorised into three key categories: Protection; Command and Control, and Accessibility – with each area subsequently explored in more detail within the report.

Speaker:

Jonathan is a Decarbonisation Risk Analyst at the Decarb Hub and a mechanical engineer by background. His current work focuses on advancing a human-centred approach to the design of alternatively fuelled vessels, including leading the Decarb Hub’s work on Safe Havens for ammonia fuelled vessels and supporting the facilitation of human factors workshops for various on-going ammonia related projects. He is also the Decarb Hub’s technical representative for the SAFEN initiative which is developing new methods for modelling loss of containment for green energy carriers, drawing on his experience supporting the development of the Hub’s inhouse Quantitative Risk Assessment tool. Beyond his work at the Hub, Jonathan contributes to the wider adoption of green fuel technology through his role on the committee of the IMechE Powertrain Systems and Fuels Group.
