Charles III, HFRINA (Honorary Fellow)

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects was founded in Britain in 1860 as The Institution of Naval Architects and was incorporated by a Royal Charter in 1910, revised in 1960. The double Royal Charter reflects our enduring role in advancing the art and science of naval architecture.

The first patron of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects was Queen Elizabeth II, who served in this role until she was succeeded by King Charles III, HFRINA (Honorary Fellow, Royal Institution of Naval Architects).

Throughout our history, we have maintained close connections with the Royal Navy and international defence communities, contributing to the design, construction, and innovation of naval vessels. This heritage underscores our commitment to supporting maritime excellence and resilience in service of both national and global interests.

Armorial Bearings granted by Elizabeth II

Our armorial bearings were granted on 25th February 1964, in the twelfth year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to be used by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects on seals, shields, and other lawful representations, in accordance with the traditions of heraldry.

All armorial bearings - a coat of arms, crest, and supporters - were granted by Sir George Rothe Bellew, Garter Principal King of Arms, Sir Gerald Woods Wollaston, Clarenceux King of Arms, and George Bellew, Norroy and Ulster King of Arms.

Having received satisfactory evidence of our standing and worthiness, and by the authority vested in them by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, they have granted and assigned to the Royal Institution of Naval Architects the following Arms:
