The Largest (partially – complete) Hydrogen Retrofit on a UK Vessel to Date

As part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), funded through Innovate UK, the RV Prince Madog is being retrofitted with a zero-emission hybrid battery and hydrogen propulsion system. OS Energy - project managers and vessel owners - will share their perspectives on the challenges of the work so far.

The retrofit is designed to deliver zero-emission scientific surveys while retaining the vessel’s existing diesel propulsion. The team is delivering a design that will meet class and statutory requirements, using a range of innovative systems including, Hydrogen fuel cells, storage cylinders, batteries and a power management system. The goal is to create a retrofit approach that can be applied to other legacy vessels.

The lecture will cover hydrogen regulations in the maritime sector and the challenges of retrofitting this technology into a small research vessel, offering lessons learned and insights for the future of clean shipping.
