The disappearance of the whelk potter Nicola Faith on the 27th January 2021 triggered a significant search and rescue operation, and lead to national news coverage. In recognition of the 5th Anniversary of the tragedy, this presentation will summarise the circumstances and causes of the sinking, as identified through the subsequent Marine Accident Investigation Branch report.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch are an independent branch of the Department for Transport, responsible for investigating all maritime accidents in UK waters or involving UK registered vessels. The report considers a wide range of factors, including the applicable regulations, the characteristics of the vessel, and the manner of her operation, while also providing recommendations to prevent similar future incidents.
Jonathan Happs is a Chartered Naval Architect at Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead. Raised in North Wales and with over a decade’s experience of the Maritime Industry at shipyards around the UK he has worked on a wide variety of projects, primarily in production facing roles, in both commercial and military contexts.
The talk is free and open to all those interested.
