This presentation will examine decarbonisation in shipping as an operational and systems challenge, extending beyond fuel selection to include vessel efficiency and lifecycle management. It will outline how carbon intensity is influenced by supply chain factors, onboard performance, and regulatory pressures. The role of hull and propeller condition is explored as a major, controllable contributor to fuel consumption and emissions variability. Fouling control strategies are positioned within the context of trading patterns and operational profiles. The discussion will then connect these elements through the use of performance data, enabling condition-based decision-making and supporting optimised coating selection, cleaning strategies, and continuous through-life efficiency improvement.
Dr Fengshuo Xing is a Vessel Performance Specialist in the Business Development Team at AkzoNobel (International Paint Ltd, UK). He holds a PhD in Marine Technology, an MSc and a BSc (Hons) in Marine Engineering, with over 14 years of experience in marine engineering and more than seven years specialising in vessel performance assessment. He has contributed to EU LIFE and Horizon research projects, applying data-driven approaches and onboard measurements to support policy development and operational decision-making. His previous seagoing experience as a Fourth Engineer provides a practical perspective on vessel operations, bridging engineering knowledge, performance analytics, and real-world challenges in maritime decarbonisation.
