Offshore vessels were designed around the capabilities and limitations of skilled personnel.  Robotics is changing that model.  This presentation explores how new operational challenges, autonomous systems and changing economics are reshaping ships and underwater craft, creating a new generation of smaller, smarter and more persistent machines for work at sea.

Vahid Walker is a Chartered Engineer and founder of Walker Subsea Engineering.  He began his career at Royal IHC in 2006, building a strong foundation in the design of complex offshore machinery. Since then, he has worked for several high-profile companies on submersible craft, marine equipment, and vessel modifications, taking projects from initial concept through to offshore operation.

The marine industry is now changing at a remarkable pace.  Robotics, electrification and autonomy are transforming how vessels and underwater craft are designed, deployed and operated.  Through Walker Subsea, Vahid is applying his engineering experience to that transition, developing underwater power and propulsion systems for the emerging autonomous fleet.

Based in Newcastle, he is committed to building new marine technology in the North East and strengthening the region’s position in the ocean economy.
