“Vittorio: Savoy's Lost Deptford Warship”

By Dr. Jaime Pérez-Martínez PhD, CEng, MRINA, Strategic Projects Director, Altadia Group

Date:                  Wednesday, 14th January 2026

Time:                 18:00-19:15 hours (duration approximately 1 ¼ hours)

Organiser:         RINA London Branch

Meeting Type:   Webinar Only.

This presentation explores how an apparently anonymous 60-gun Navy Board-style model in the National Maritime Museum’s Chatham collection can be reconnected to a specific historical vessel through close technical and archival analysis. Beginning with the traditional catalogue attribution of the model as a mid-eighteenth-century Spanish ship, it examines British Establishment dimensions and contemporary 60-gun plans, showing that while the construction technique and proportions are English, particular features are incompatible with standard Royal Navy practice but highly appropriate for Mediterranean warfare. By correlating principal dimensions, operational requirements, and heraldic motifs, the talk proposes that it is the only surviving physical witness to a short-lived but politically significant ship.
