The Modern Superyacht - Enlarged Yacht or Small Ship? |
In a presentation to the Southern Joint Branch, James Roy (BMT Nigel Gee & Associates) looked at the market and the costs of some of these vessels, putting size and complexity into perspective. He then looked at design from an historical perspective, going on to cover in overview a number of areas relating to few areas of technology that have seen fairly rapid application in superyacht design.

A study of the effect of slamming on sandwich panels |
Anyone who has seen recent footage of the Velux 5 Oceans Race - or even sailed around the buoys in a local fleet race - can attest to the fact that sailing yachts live in a world that is far from static. Similarly, sportsfisher motorboats and patrol craft crash through waves on a daily basis. The current scantling codes used in the design of these vessels are based on the application of uniformly distributed quasi-static pressures on shell panels - a loading scenario that is far from reality. |

Concept Boat Competition |
| The Concept Boat competition is a major initiative from the British Marine Industries Federation (BMIF) in conjunction with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. The major aim of this project is to provide an opportunity for all people with an interest in small craft - whether professional or amateur - to show not just the global small craft industry, but the whole marine industry, what they want to be navigating this new millennium. |
