Reports of Section meetings and activities, articles of interest to Section members.  Members proposing articles for inclusion in the Section News page should contact the Hon Secretary.

The NSW Section held its nineteenth AGM on the evening of 1 March, following the March technical presentation in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood, attended by 10 with Alan Taylor in the chair.

Robin Sandell, Principal of Sandell Consulting, , gave a presentation on Making Ferries More Useful and more Efficient to a joint meeting with the IMarEST attended by 34 on 1 March in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood.

Trevor Blakeley, Chief Executive of RINA, gave a presentation on The Route to Chartered Membership to a meeting attended by 14 on 1 March in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood.

Valerio Corniani, Marine Manager, Diab Group, gave a presentation on Designing for Slamming Loads on Composite Vessels to a joint meeting with the IMarEST. It was held on 1 February in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood and was attended by 29 people.

The NSW Section Committee met on 26 January and, other than routine matters, discussed:
 

The seventeenth SMIX (Sydney Marine Industry Christmas) Bash was held on Thursday 1 December aboard the beautifully-restored James Craig alongside Wharf 7, Darling Harbour, from 1730 to 2130. The Bash was organised jointly by the IMarEST (Sydney Branch) and RINA (NSW Section). More than 200 guests came from the full spectrum of the marine industry, including naval architects, marine engineers, drafters, boatbuilders, machinery and equipment suppliers, regulators, classifiers, surveyors, operators, managers, pilots, navigators, researchers, and educators. Equally importantly, the full spectrum of age groups was represented, from present students to the elders of the marine community.

The NSW Section Committee also met on 25 October and, other than routine matters, discussed:

Drew Shannon, Manager East Coast, London Offshore Consultants, gave a presentation on Salvage of Containership Rena off Tauranga in New Zealand to a joint meeting with the IMarEST attended by 30 on 5October in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood.

Nick Browne, Research Supply Icebreaker Project Manager, Australian Antarctic Division, gave a presentation on Australia's New Antarctic Vessel to a joint meeting with the IMarEST attended by 46 on 7 September in the Harricks Auditorium at Engineers Australia, Chatswood. This was the fifth-highest attendance of the 93 presentations held in Chatswood.
