IMO Group


The IMO Group provides an opportunity for all members to raise and discuss matters relating to the Institution’s work and responsibilities as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with Consultative Status at the IMO using the Group Forum.

The work and activities of the IMO  Committee will be reported regularly in the Forum.  Members may also comment on the Committee’s work, or propose matters for its consideration

During the year, members of the IMO Committee of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects represented the Institution at IMO Committees and Sub-Committees. The following is a summary of matters addressed by IMO in those Committees:

Ship Design and Construction (SDC) 4

o Amendments to SOLAS II-1 SDS regulations 6 and 8.1.
o Computerised stability support for the master in case of flooding for existing passenger ships.
o Second generation intact stability criteria
o Amendments to part B of the 2008 IS Code on towing, lifting and anchor handling operations
o Safe Mooring Operations
o classification of offshore industry vessels and a review of the need for a non-mandatory code for offshore construction support vessels
o Amendments to the 2011 ESP Code.
o Mandatory instrument and/or provisions addressing safety standards for the carriage of more than 12 industrial personnel on board vessels engaged in international voyages
o Guidelines for use of FRP in ship structures.

The Sub-committee agreed to set up working and drafting groups at the next meeting on:-
o Intact Stability
o SDS
o Safety of WIG craft
o Safe mooring operations.
o Carriage of more than 12 industrial personnel.
The following correspondence groups were agreed:-
o Intact Stability
o SDS
o Carriage of more than 12 industrial personnel
o Safe mooring operations

Ship systems and equipment (SSE) 4

o Requirements for onboard lifting appliances and anchor handling winches
o Objectives and functional requirements of Life Saving Appliances (LSA).
o Implementation of the LSA Code.
o New requirements for ventilation of survival craft.
o Consequential amendments to the Polar Code.
o Unified Interpretations.
o FSS Code matters relating to CO2 pipelines

The sub-committee agreed to set up working and drafting groups at the next meeting on:-
o Fire Protection
o Life saving appliances
o On board lifting appliances and winches
o Anti crushing protection devices for WT doors
The following correspondence groups were agreed:-
o Life saving appliances
o On board lifting appliances

Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) 98

o Amendments were made to the following,
1974 SOLAS, IGF Code, 1994 HSC Code, 2000 HSC Code, LSA Code, IMSBC Code
o Cyber Security
o The Polar Code
o The value of 'R' in SOLAS regulation II-1/6.
o The Safety Level Approach associated with Goal Cased Standards.
o Onboard Lifting Appliances and Winches.
o New work programme items on Autonomous Surface ships, and Amendments to SOLAS Ch. III and the LSA Code.

The committee agreed to set up working and drafting groups at the next meeting on:-
o Goal based standards.
o Maritime security
o Safety measures for non-SOLAS ships operating in Polar waters
o Amendments to mandatory instruments
o Maritime Autonomous surface ships
