Intellectual Property Rights & the Naval Architect Seminar 2016
22 June 2016, RINA HQ, London, UK
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are an increasingly important part of a company’s value. As developed countries move to knowledge based economies, protection of IPR becomes both more difficult and more important for designer, particularly in a more competetive market. In a global marketplace, international protection of IPR is complex and generally not well understood in sectors of the maritime industry.
The one-day Seminar on IPR and the Naval Architect will provide designers, and others involved in the marine industry, with an understanding of IPR law and the extent to which it protects inventions and designs. The seminar will consist of a number of sessions in which presentations on various aspects of IPR will be given by experts and practictioners, followed by discussion:
Session 1: Patents, copyrights and other forms of IPR protection.
• What are they? - What protection do they offer the designer or builder?
Session 2: Scope of protection in a global industry
• Respect for IPR in other countries around the world - uncontrolled copying - differing views on prior invention - can a small company protect its IPR against predators, or is might right?
Session 3: Using IPR.
• Protecting a new twist on an old idea - ‘spirit of tradition’ designs - how far need an old mould be modified to become a new design? - how far can existing IPR cover a further development?
Session 4: Panel discussion
