Technical Note Title: ISO-12215-5 (2018) and Fast Craft Operational Envelope Equations: A View from a Small Commercial Craft Design Office
Author
P R Loscombe, Vectis Marine Design Ltd, UK
Summary
The revised ISO scantling standard (ISO/FDIS-12215-5), currently as of September 2018 at ISO 50.00 - FDIS received for final approval stage, will formally recognise the use of the standard for determination of commercial craft scantlings with the introduction of specific additional requirements in a new Annex (J - Workboats). Annex J includes a requirement that an operational envelope be provided in the owner’s manual. This technical note provides an explanation of the ISO dynamic load factors not expressed in the standard, an examination of the fitness-for-purpose of currently-available semi-empirical operational-envelope equations and concludes by offering a pragmatic interim solution specifically aimed at the level of the tight time/budget constrained design office.
