The world’s top design talent is descending on Auckland during the Volvo Ocean Race stopover to attend the fifth HPYD international conference, organised by University of Auckland and RINA (NZ).
Come March 2015, the global sailing fraternity will turn its attention to Auckland as the Volvo Ocean Race competitors roll into town, and as the fifth-High Performance Yacht Design conference kicks off as part of the race celebrations.
HYPD5 will cover all topics relating to high performance power and sailing yachts, and is organised under the auspices of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) NZ and the University of Auckland.
The conference will be held in the centre of the stopover village, which features a working boat yard where the maintenance crew will be working on preparing the yachts for the next leg through the Southern Ocean. The seven race yachts are moored directly outside the conference venue and the conference dinner is being held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron home club of Emirates Team New Zealand.
There is an Ice Breaker function on Sunday 8th March 2015 at the National Maritime Museum, with the formal conference running from Monday 9th March through to Wednesday 11th March optional industry visits are available on Thursday 12th. The Volvo Ocean ace Pro-Am Races occur on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th March, the In-Port Race will be sailed on Saturday 14th March with the start of Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday 15th March right outside the conference.
