Communication Skills for Engineers

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects, in conjunction with Emmett and Smith, offers two one-day workshops aimed at developing the communication skills of engineers.

The workshops demonstrate how to effectively communicate in business with a specific focus on customer and colleague engagement through enhanced presentation and networking skills. Delegates are provided with opportunities to utilise their newly acquired knowledge, practice their new skills and receive constructive feedback. Delegates are encouraged to be proactive and contribute towards the process as they grow in confidence.

Effective Communication - 11 May

This workshop covers the fundamental communications skills required by all engineers. It includes:

  • Understanding what effective communication is
  • Active listening
    • Tips
    • Bad habits
    • The listening hierarchy
  • Verbal & non-verbal communication
  • Laws of Remembering & Forgetting
  • The communication pyramid
  • Attention Spans

The Effective Communications workshop  provides a useful, but not essential, lead-in to the more focussed workshop on Effective Presentation and Networking workshop.


Effective Presentation and Networking - 12 May

This workshop covers the skills needed by engineers who are required to give presentations, both oral and written, and network at all levels.  It includes:

  • Understanding the purpose and value of powerful communication
  • Developing  communication skills to ensure there is consistency and maximum effect.
  • Being open in communication situations and have confidence to put forward own / new ideas
  • Using techniques to ensure that you are concise in communications
  • Creating an action plan to fine tune your communication skills through presentations and networking activities.

About the Course Leaders

Lorraine Emmett: a media & communications professional with 20 years’ experience of working with engineers, interpreting their words, enabling them to manage journalists, observing them at events, translating their presentations into thought leadership and turning their projects into headline news stories.

Juliet Love:  a learning & development consultant with more than 20 years of working cross functionally within organisations to improve capability and add value to the organisation through designing and delivering impactful learning interventions

*VAT: Under UK Customs and Excise regulations delegates from all countries are required to pay VAT on any course taking place in the UK. Delegates from outside the UK may be entitled to reclaim this costs. 

Payments must be made in sterling by Eurocheque, cheque drawn on a bank with a UK branch address or sterling bank transfer. Please note that RINA requires payment before the conference date.

Places for this training course are limited and so are offered on a first come first served basis. Cancellations received in writing one month before the event takes place will be subject to an administration charge of £200+VAT. Cancellations received after this time cannot be accepted and are subject to the full event fee. Delegates may be substituted; however this must be sent in writing and confirmed with the Conference Co-ordinator. In the event of cancellation of the programme for any reason, our liability is limited to the return of the registration fee

Conference delegates may take advantage of the Institution’s membership of Club Quarters to stay at its Trafalgar Square Hotel, situated at 8 Northumberland Avenue ­ less than one minute’s walk from RINA Headquarters.

The Institution’s membership provides a fixed lowest rate of £159 per room which is always available to conference delegates, regardless of the varying higher rates throughout the year for non members.  An even lower rate is available only for conference delegates at weekends (Fri, Sat and Sun) and holidays (£69).
