February saw Norway’s Havyard subcontract production of its PSV newbuild 126 to compatriot shipyard Kleven Verft, which aims to deliver the newbuild to Canadian offshore service shipping company Atlantic Towing Ltd (ATL) in summer this year.
The decision to outsource the newbuild was blamed on delays at Havyard’s Leirvik yard, incurred by prior ship construction projects overrunning, creating what Havyard calls a “ripple effect on the completion of the remaining order book”. The order book is reported to comprise seven newbuilds in total.
Havyard’s intention was deliver the vessel to ATL in April this year, after the Canadian operator confirmed it would purchase the PSV in summer 2019. The vessel, now to be named Atlantic Harrier, was originally ordered by another customer in 2014, but that contract fell through when the customer cancelled in early 2017.
The PSV in question is a Havyard 833 WE-type supply vessel. The newbuild features an overall length of 89.7m, a moulded breadth of 19.6m and a depth of 8m. Features will include a 1,000m2 deck area and accommodation for 54 persons. The vessel will carry DNV GL’s ICE-1B notation. As part of its planned hybrid diesel-electric power package, the PSV will be fitted with a 650kWh battery pack, in a bid to reduce its overall diesel fuel consumption.
