Kongsberg Maritime has incorporated 2G Robotics’ ULS-500 PRO laser scanning solution into a batch of its Hugin-branded AUVs, which it is supplying to the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) to assist with underwater mine detection.

According to Kongsberg, the Hugin models will enable “fast and efficient operations with zero surface visibility, while additionally improving safety conditions by allowing personnel to remain outside the minefield”. The AUVs will also be deployed for hydrographic operations: for instance, they may be able to assist in detecting unexploded ordnance (UXO) at potential offshore sites.

The ULS-500 PRO system collects data in real time and converts it into 3D models for the end user. In terms of accuracy, it can pinpoint “to the sub-centimetre”, 2G adds. The system also includes the 2G Observer camera, which can capture images at 12 frames per second, and the 2G Nova LED panel, which can brighten up environments with almost 1,000,000lumens.
