2014 President's Invitation Lecture & Dinner

The 2014 President’s Invitation Lecture was presented by Dr Bas Buchner, President of the Marine Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) , to an invited audience of over 100 representatives of the global maritime industry. The title of his Lecture was Research for Future Ships and Offshore Structures: Bridging the Gap between Design and Operation, addressing an issue of the utmost importance to the global maritime industry.
Dr Bas Buchner is a naval architect. He studied at Delft University of Technology and graduated in 1991. He joined the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) as Project Manager responsible for many model test and simulation projects related to mooring, platform response, offloading analysis and wave impact loading. He specialised in the topics of extreme waves, green water loading and wave impacts. He completed his PhD on the subject of 'Green Water Loading on Ship Type Offshore Structures' in 2002.
He was Manager of the MARIN Offshore Department from 2000 to 2010. In this position he was responsible for many Joint Industry Projects in the Offshore industry, such as the Cooperative Research on Extreme Seas and their impacT Joint Industry Project on extreme waves and platform response. In addition, he was Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and has authored more than 50 papers in the field of offshore hydrodynamics. He was Chairman of the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering in 2011 (OMAE 2011). In 2011, he was appointed President of MARIN, a position he holds today.
The annual President’s Invitation Lecture is sponsored by ABS, who were thanked by the President of the Institution, Bruce Rosenblatt, for the support which ABS give to this and other Institution activities. Ms Kirsi Tikka, President of ABS Europe, presented Dr Buchner the “ABS Eagle”.
