Engineering in Government |
Together with a number of professional institutions and other organisations, the Royal Institution of Naval Architect has responded the major enquiry by the UK Parliament's Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee (IUSS) on "Engineering in (the UK) Government". The overriding messages of this response are that the Government must recognise the difference between scientific advice and engineering advice and ensure that policy is appropriately informed by engineering advice at all stages of development and delivery. Presently, the Government does not articulate a clear view of the role of engineering in society or in policy making. Too often, phrases such as "science and technology" or scientific "innovation" are fielded as a substitute for "engineering". |

This statement was produced through discussions with engineers from a number of different engineering institutions and with philosophers specialising in applied ethics. It is intended to be a statement of the values and principles that guide engineering practice and should supplement the codes of practice published by the various engineering institutions.

The Role of the Modern Professional Institution |
The historic role of engineering professional institutions such as the Royal Institution of Naval Architects has been to promote and facilitate the exchange of technical and scientific information, views and discussion, and through this to influence and contribute towards furthering the knowledge and standards within their particular discipline of engineering. Professional institutions today have a wider and more proactive part to play in promoting the individual and corporate standards of professional competence and conduct that industry requires and society demands. |

And then came Complex Project Management |
A paper presented at the 21st IPMA World Congress on Project Management
Abstract
The subject of management is renowned for its addiction to fads and fashions. Project Management is no exception. The issue of interest for this paper is the establishment of the 'College of Complex Project Managers' and their 'competency standard for complex project managers.' Both have generated significant interest in the Project Management community, and like any other human endeavour they should be subject to critical evaluation.... |
