A team of local students have sailed their way to success to be crowned winners of a new schools engineering challenge organised by BAE Systems in Portsmouth, with support from the Southern Joint Branch of RINA & IMarEST and SP-High Modulus.
Year 10 pupils from schools across the Portsmouth area took part in the three week challenge at Fareham College to design and build model ships using glass fibre, modelling foam and epoxy resins. At the end of June, the teams went head to head putting their models through their paces in a series of challenges at Southampton Solent University to assess their speed, stability, sea keeping and survivability in rough conditions with the Southern Joint Branch providing electric propulsion motors and refreshments. |
