At its 83rd session, the Maritime Safety Committee of the IMO considered a paper by the Russian Federation which referred to the paper submitted earlier by the Institution drawing attention the disproportionate losses suffered by general cargo ships. The Russian Federation paper proposed that the necessary studies and analysis be carried out to assess the adequacy of current safety requirements for general cargo ships. The Committee agreed to include an item in the provisional agenda for MSC 83 on "General cargo ship safety" to assess the adequacy of current safety requirements for general cargo ships and, when the necessary information has been submitted, to consider establishing an ad hoc Working Group on General Cargo Ship Safety at a session. Member Governments and international organizations were invited to submit, the appropriate information on the matter.
The Safety Committee has submitted a further paper, suggesting that further work should include an analysis of the causes of a representative number of the major types of accident. This paper is published on the Maritime Safety Committee page.
