Graduate WorkshopGuidance to graduates who are Asssociate Members and at the IPD stage of their professional development is available through a Graduate Workshop, lasting 60-90 minutes and organised by the Professional Affairs Department staff at the graduate' place of work. Work Experience/InternshipsStudent Members may publish requests for work experience/internships on the Work Experience/Internships wenpage. MentoringDuring the period of Initial Professional Development (IPD), when they are seeking to achieve the professional competence required for Corporate membership, Associate Members may benefit from the advice of a Mentor. The Mentor will focus on the professional and personal needs of the Associate Member, providing assistance with the self-assessment of strengths, weaknesses and development needs of the individual, immediately with respect to meeting the requirements of Corporate membership, but also with ensuring that the individual achieves the sound foundation for a successful career. The Mentor will provide valuable continuity during this period. Guide to Mentoring (pdf file) Sponsored Conferences PlacesRINA organises a programme of international conferences, workshops and training courses, covering a broad range of experience and opinion on research, development and operation on all aspects of naval architecture and maritime technology. A number of free conference places, sponsored by RINA and industry, are available for all Student Members and Graduate Members still in full-time education. Since its inception, this programme has proven to be a great success, providing many students with the opportunity to attend RINA organised conferences. Student sponsorship covers entrance into the conference and copy of the conference proceedings in printed format. Applicants must be able to attend both or all days of a particular conference. Students allocated sponsored places who fail to attend the full conference without informing the Institution or without good reason will not be allocated places at future conferences. Sponsored places are allocated on a 'first come - first served' basis. A limited number of sponsored places is available for each conference and normally only one place per year will be allocated to the same student. However, unsuccessful applicants or students who have already been allocated a place may request to go on to the reserve list. Application for sponsored places should be made to: Yuen Yee Pang Students who are unsuccessful in obtaining sponsored places are eligible for the discounted Student Delegate rate. Details of forthcoming conferences are published on the Events page. Qinetic Powerboat ChallengeDefence and security technology company, QinetiQ, is introducing schoolchildren to ship design by organising the inaugural QinetiQ Schools Powerboat Challenge, supported by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. Building a model powerboat is not a simple task. The pupils will be challenged with balancing criteria such as size, speed, weight and motor cooling - while at the same time making it safe to operate and with a stylish livery. In this sense, the pupils will all become Naval Architects throughout this process. On the day of the race the pupils will have to present their boats to a team of QinetiQ scientists, engineers and mathematicians and this will add a valuable presentation and learning element to their experience. Pupils are required to compile a log book or presentation of their work to show how they undertook the design and build process. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest boat and the best engineered design and then the winning teams will be invited back to QinetiQ for a guided tour around the world-class and historic facilities. This will provide a unique insight into ship and submarine design, unseen by the general public, and enable them to put the knowledge they gained from building their model into the context of real business. The winning teams will be awarded with a year's Junior Membership to RINA. This competition really demonstrates how science, engineering and mathematics can lead to exciting and diverse careers - particularly in marine engineering and naval architecture.
