This was read by Dick Ward of LRQA. The lecture was mainly aimed at the urgent need to build new Nuclear Power Stations in UK to meet the ever-increasing demand for electrical power, without contributing further to global warming. A growing proportion of our electricity is imported from French Nuclear stations. Although UK was the first nation to produce nuclear electricity for civil use at Calder Hall back in 1956, much of our technical expertise has fallen away. Yes, there are safety considerations and engineers of all disciplines need to educate themselves to secure safety and a reliable electrical supply. If not, power cuts will be on the horizon, lights will go out, trains will not run, people depending on electricity for life will die!!! It takes 10 years to build a new Power Station. The lecture highlighted the procedure and process to achieve this. Note: - The new nuclear power stations will be owned and built by the French Company EDF (EDF stands for "Electricite de France") and the German company e.on!!!
In the Royal Navy we have a very dedicated and experienced team of Nuclear Engineers for our Submarines, the newest of which will carry sufficient fuel for the whole life of the vessels, (40 years plus). Many of the world's navies have nuclear surface ships. USA with 11 nuclear aircraft carriers, each with accommodation for 3000 crew and service personnel. Russia have a number of nuclear icebreakers, some of which are carrying passengers to the North Pole and can break ice up to nine meters thick. Look to the Internet to see what there is in all things Nuclear.
