Together with a number of professional institutions and other organisations, the Royal Institution of Naval Architect has responded the major enquiry by the UK Parliament's Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee (IUSS) on "Engineering in (the UK) Government". The overriding messages of this response are that the Government must recognise the difference between scientific advice and engineering advice and ensure that policy is appropriately informed by engineering advice at all stages of development and delivery. Presently, the Government does not articulate a clear view of the role of engineering in society or in policy making. Too often, phrases such as "science and technology" or scientific "innovation" are fielded as a substitute for "engineering".
