Following the decision at DE51 that further work was needed, the correspondence group on guidelines for uniform operating limitations of high-speed craft was re-established.
The IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment on its 51st session held in February 2008 in Bonn, Germany, progressed further the work for the preparation of the guidelines for uniform operating limitations of high speed crafts.
The Sub-Committee on its 50th session, in March 2007, had established a correspondence group under the co-ordination of Australia instructed to develop draft guidelines.
Many delegations took part in the work of the group, including the NGO RINA, in 2007 and 2008 leading to a report (DE51/13 submitted by Australia) that included the draft guidelines and identified issues needing further discussion.
DE 51 supported the draft document in principle and agreed that further work was needed, in particular concerning a consistent application of operating limits for different wave heights and sea trials at lower wave heights and subsequent extrapolation of wave heights.
The correspondence group was therefore re-established under the co-ordination of Australia with target completion date of 2009. RINA will continue to participate as a member of the group, which will submit a report to DE 52.
