Overview
SAFEDOR (Design, Operation and Regulation for Safety) is an Integrated Project (IP) funded by the European Commission under the 6th RTD Framework Programme (2005-2009). It undertakes to deliver the foundation for Europe to sustain world-leadership on safety-critical and knowledge-intensive ships, services, products, equipment and related software and to instil systematic innovation in ship design and operation by modernising the maritime regulatory system.
SAFEDOR is the second phase of a conceived long-term activity of European maritime industry organisations to design, operate and regulate next generation European ships with increased safety levels. The first phase consisted of a large group of independent RTD-projects within FP4 and FP5 - all coordinated by the thematic network SAFER EURORO. SAFEDOR and its 53 consortium partners, representing all stakeholders of the European maritime industry, now undertake the next step towards integrating available knowledge to achieve increased competitiveness of the European maritime industries.
The aim of SAFEDOR is specifically to improve the safety of maritime transportation, to increase European shipbuilding competitiveness through the integration of risk criteria within ship design and approval frameworks in a rational and cost-effective basis and to provide stimulus establishing and further enhancing the maritime safety culture. Activities encompass the development of a formalised risk-based ship design framework, the development and integration of methods and tools to assess critical scenarios with due account of the human element, the development of a risk-based regulatory framework to facilitate first principles approaches to safety, the development of a series prototype-innovative designs for safety-critical and knowledge-intensive vessels (like cruisers, RoPax, gas and oil tankers and containerships), validating the developed methodology and demonstrating its practicality and the adaptation of risk-based design methods in the training of professionals and young engineers.
SAFEDOR addresses with expertise all the objectives of the Sustainable Surface Transport priority, topic "Risk based ship design and approval" of the 6th RTD Framework Programme of the European Commission.
