The EC(UK) Board agreed in December 2006 that there should be a review of the Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration category and a working group was established to undertake this.The group has now submitted its first report.
The report contains a number of recommendations, of which the three principal ones are:
-
That consultation should take place with Licensed Members on repositioning IEng as part of a progressive registration structure. This would have the effect of opening the possibility of IEng registration to a broader group than at present, including not only those traditionally covered by the IEng designation but also others, including graduates with Honours degrees accredited for CEng, who might aspire to eventual CEng registration;
-
The title of the qualification should be changed. The review group suggests Registered Engineer as the favoured alternative, but recommends market research before a final decision is made;
-
The exemplifying academic qualification should remain unchanged, as a Bachelors degree (non-honours).
The ECUK Board has supported all the review group's recommendations, and also agreed that the current descriptor and competence statements should be reviewed if the proposed repositioning. It asked the review group to take forward the necessary work.
The Professional Affairs Committee invites comments on the Report, which may be passed to the review group. Comments may be forwarded using the Professional Affairs Forum
