28 - 29 November 2007, Shanghai, China.
International Symposium on Ship Design & Construction - 'Bulk Carriers, Oil Tankers and Container Ships'.
Organised by:
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects & The Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In conjunction with Marintec China 2007

Introduction
The theme of the International Symposium on Ship Design and Construction - China 2007, will be large commercial ships.
The trend towards increased size of container ships presents unique challenges for designers, builders and operators of these vessels. The high speeds and unconventional structural arrangements of increasingly larger container ships has raised concerns over issues such as structural strength, severe weather loads, stability deck cargo arrangements, potential problems with the safety and speed of loading and unloading.
The increased complexity in the design, construction and operation of double hulled oil tankers also presents potential problems for designers, builders and operators. Concerns have been raised about the difficulty of inspecting and maintaining double hull ships, and to date there is little operational experience available on the long term structural and operational characteristics, such as the fatigue performance of the structure and corrosion protection of the ballast spaces.
The option of double-side skin construction, together with the introduction of new mandatory standards and criteria aimed at increasing bulk carrier survivability also present similar problems to the designers, builders and operators of these ships.
The increasing demands of operators, regulators and society for larger vessels, greater efficiency, improved safety and the protection of the environment presents challenges to designers, builders and operators. Many of these challenges are common to container ships, tankers and bulk carriers, and will require innovative thinking in all sectors of the industry if they are to be met.
This conference will present an opportunity for representatives from all sectors to share experience gained with the latest generations of large commercial ships, and look forward to new developments in these ship types.
