A study of cored/monolithic transitions

It is often asserted by engineers that it is 'better' to taper the core at the
core-to-monolithic transition, rather than leave it square. But some people feel that the difference doesn't justify the extra work involved.

At High Modulus, we believe in providing solutions to suit each individual project, and understand that the ideal solution will vary across projects as a result. So our in-house R&D facility in New Zealand recently set out to determine the difference, in engineering terms, between tapered and square-cut edges, and to answer questions to help both us and our customers make an informed decision about the right solution for them.

The questions we asked included: How much taper is appropriate? Is any additional reinforcement required? And if so, how much?
