The competition is open to yacht club members, naval architects, boat-builders, engineers, students or anyone with an interest in small craft. The judges of the event consist of a panel of experienced judges from the RINA Small Craft Committee, BMF and appropriate user representatives. Entries are judged on the level of practicality of design and originality of thought in the creation of a safe, usable and stylish boat to meet the theme of the competition, which changes each year.
At the time of the launch of the first Concept Boat 2002 competition, John Clarke, Chief Executive, BMF commented, "This project is very cutting edge for the industry and we're looking forward to seeing some of the innovative designs that are submitted. We are hoping that this competition really brings out of the blue some imaginative ideas." Trevor Blakeley, Chief Executive of RINA, commented, "The Royal Institution of Naval Architects is very pleased to join with the BMF in this new and exciting competition. It will provide an opportunity to look to the future and will give the professional and amateur boat designer, or simply anyone interested in boating the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in the most imaginative way."
