OVERVIEW

Naval architects and marine engineers have a direct influence over designs and as such have an influence over how their designs are used by seafarers. In recent years, they have made increasing efforts to gain an awareness of human element issues and to improve their understanding of how and why their designs influence human behaviour.

The traditional view that human error is the major cause of all accidents is being challenged by some who consider human error to be a symptom of deeper problems with the system.

Errors can be induced through bad design, poor training or poor/inadequate management systems. Indeed, some argue that modern technology has reached a point where improved safety can only be achieved on the basis of a better understanding of human element within the system. This conference aims to bring together international specialists and professionals including designers, ship operators, mariners, equipment manufactures and regulators to highlight how the sensible application of ergonomics and human factors can provides an opportunity to both reduce costs and improve safety.
