29 - 30 April 2004, The Victoria Park Plaza, London, UK In Association with the Ministry of Defence Sea Technology Group
OVERVIEW
The idea of trimaran ships has inspired a tremendous amount of attention, both civil and military. The concept; a stabilised monohull, with small sidehulls adding stability to a slender central hull, has a number of potential advantages. The most obvious are the increased control over stability and greater flexibility in layout, but other advantages include better seakeeping, reduced speed loss in a seaway and possible high speed powering and vulnerability benefits. The subject has now been thoroughly investigated around the world with a combination of design studies, numerical simulation, model testing and the construction of the large ocean-going technology demonstrator, RV Triton. The trials have proven highly successful and have produced a large amount of data; validating prediction methods and design tools and providing experience of operating a seagoing vessel in all weather conditions.
There is now an increasing move to exploit this new technology, culminating in the recent order of a large trimaran fast ferry to operate in the Canary Islands.
This conference will definitively review the present situation with a selection of papers from civil and defence sources, as well as providing a forum to discuss plans for the future. This conference is planned with the UK MoD to include very significant discussion of the results of the Triton trials programme

CONTENT
A wide range of outstanding papers will be presented at the conference, including:
- Keynote presentations from Rear Admiral Charles Style, discussing MOD interest in trimaran ships, and Nigel Gee, who will speak about the future of commercial pentamaran and trimaran operation
- Structural, hydrodynamic and operational results of the RV Triton trials programme, including papers from the operators and the Master of the vessel
- A report on the design and build of the new Austal trimaran fast ferry for Olsen Lines
- A report on the North West Bay Ships trimaran fast ferry, currently operating between Japan & Korea
- Papers from leading societies discussing classification issues
- Papers on the future use of trimarans - both economic analyses of future shipping strategies and military analyses of future projects, including the UK FSC and US LCS
- Papers on trimaran roll motions and roll reduction techniques
- Reports on new and future projects from leading shipyards and designers
- Updates on research from a range of international organisations; including universities, industry and governmental groups

ADDITIONAL WRITTEN PAPERS
Responding to the tremendous demand that has already been shown for this conference, RINA will be publishing a number of written papers in addition to the approximately 25 papers that will be presented at the conference. Currently these papers are expected to include work on Trimaran Arrangement and Architecture, Concept Design, Propulsion Systems and Global Strength Assessment.
