SURV 6: SURVEILLANCE, PILOT & RESCUE CRAFT

17 - 18 March 2004, RINA HQ, London, UK

OVERVIEW

In March 2004, RINA will be holding its sixth SURV conference. This series of events have, since 1990, successfully provided a forum for discussion on the design, production and operation of surveillance vessels, pilot boats, and rescue craft.

This conference will not only provide an update on developments since the previous conference held in 2000 but we will also be extending the programme to cover RIB's, 'mother and daughter' concepts, the new generation of offshore standby vessels, Emergency Response and Recovery Vessels (ERRV's) and installation based man overboard boats (MOB's). The conference will aim to highlight developments in design, construction and operation of these craft and their associated equipment and machinery.

The conference hopes to attract a large international audience and provide a forum for all those interested in surveillance, pilot, and rescue vessels including designers, builders and operators.

Papers will be presented on the following topics:

  • Vessel Design & Evaluation: Papers describing the philosophy behind SURV vessel thinking: including the philosophy of pilot boat procurement & operation and the development of integrated design procedures for lifeboats.
  • SWATH Vessels:  Papers will look at both the evaluation of an existing SWATH design with the benefit of hindsight and a discussion on the design of SWATH vessels.
  • Systems: The latest developments in small craft systems, including integrated control systems, daughter craft recovery structures, waterjets and crew seats.
  • The Human Element: Papers looking at the critical issue of human factors. Topics include health & Safety and training, human centered systems development and human centered vessel design.
  • Surveillance Craft: Presentations on two new designs for patrol and surveillance craft, including an EEZ Support Vessel from VT Shipbuilding and a new class of Patrol Craft from Abeking & Rasmussen.
  • Rescue Craft: A selection of papers covering three advanced rescue vessel designs and a description of a major project by BP  to develop an integrated North Sea rescue strategy. This will include philosophy as well as technical discussion of the vessels now in production.
