25 - 26 February 2004 - RINA HQ, London, UK
OVERVIEW
The introduction of double hulled crude carriers raised many questions about the potentially increased complexity of their design, construction and operation. Concerns were raised about the difficulty of inspecting and maintaining double hull tankers and there was little operational experience available on the long term structural and operational characteristics, such as the fatigue performance of the structure and corrosion protection of the ballast spaces. The first generation of double hull tankers are now reaching a critical period in their operating lives, since they are nearing their second special survey when technical problems may start to become evident. Much research has also been undertaken over the last decade to assess the effects of this technology. This conference will consider the design, operational aspects and consequences of double-hulled tankers

CONTENT
Presented papers will include:
- Keynote Presentation by Nick Davison, Senior Naval Architect at BP. Discussing the key factors in designing, building and operating double hull tankers from an owners persepctive.
- The Next Generation of Classification Rules. A joint paper from LR, DNV and ABS on their common rules for oil tankers over 150 m in length.
- Operational Experience. A presentation from Hans Richard Hansen, President of IUM Shipmanagement, on his experiences operating Aframax double hull offshore loading shuttle tankers since the mid 1980's.
- Structures. Papers from Class societies on their experiences so far with double hull tankers, papers on risk based design and papers on SPS structures.
- Inspections. Presentations on advanced survey techniques & technology as well as how to get the best from your inspections.
- Design Solutions. Presentations on single to double hull conversion techniques, and two new tanker design solutions.
- Corrosion. A paper from INTERTANKO on corrosion issues, as well as papers describing the issues surrounding microbial corrosion and a discussion of new and existing corrosion prevention technologies.

Additional Papers & Presentations
Due to a production error, the electronic programme, available below, does not include information on the presentation The Double Hull Experience of USNS Putuxent, TAO 201, by Bob Wasalaski, Naval Sea Systems Command, USA and Hans Hofmann, AMSEC, USA. This paper will look at how the TAO 201 sub series were to lead the way in conforming with, and recommending changes to, the IMO pollution rules and classification society building rules. RINA is also hoping to publish additional papers on the design of double-hull inland water tankers and structural design defficiencies in view of fracture propagation.
