EUMARTECH 2007 The European Maritime Policy - Implementation and Sustainable Future
Organised by the Asociación de Ingenieros Navales y Oceánicos de España (AINE) and The Ordem dos Engenheiros - Portugal (OdE-CEN), on behalf of the Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies (CEMT)
The maritime industries in Europe have been under a long process of reorganization, trying to recover from a period in which other world economies have won a fair amount of the market share. Today, it is common knowledge within the maritime industry experts, that only through research and technology innovation it is possible to the European enterprises to become competitive in the worldwide market.
Europe is heavily dependent on the shipping trade and the maritime activities play a significant role in the European economy. The environment protection awareness is stronger every day and the control over natural resources has become a prerequisite of every activity. Sustainability is a key word in all the activities. Tourism and other leisure activities are increasingly important and they represent a substantial source of employment and national income. In some fields, the ocean knowledge is still rather incomplete, demanding additional efforts in scientific research with more advanced platforms and equipment.
The European Maritime Technology Societies which are members of the CEMT represent over 30,000 naval architects, naval and marine engineers, as well as other skilled professionals across the whole spectrum of maritime activities; they have a broad and uncompromising view of this important sector of the economy. In organizing this international conference, CEMT, AINE and OE-CEN are matching the EU challenge of promoting the discussion of the European Maritime Policy.
